# Number pools

> Group numbers into a pool so outbound campaigns show each contact a local caller ID.

A pool is a group of numbers your firm owns, used so an outbound campaign can show each contact a caller ID local to them instead of dialing from one fixed number every time. Pools live under **Routing pools**, at the bottom of the Channels page.

## How a pool picks a number

Selection happens automatically at the moment of the call. Compensable first looks for a pool member whose area code matches the lead's, then falls back to a member in the same state, and rotates between equally good matches so calls don't cluster on one number. Every selection is recorded. If nothing in the pool matches, the campaign falls back to its own configured caller ID, so a dial never goes out without a number attached.

## Create a pool

<Steps>
  <Step title="Open the dialog">
    On Channels, under Routing pools, select **New pool**.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Name it">
    Give the pool a name that describes its coverage, for example "Florida presence," and select **Create pool**.
  </Step>
</Steps>

The pool starts empty. Add numbers to it before pointing a campaign at it.

## Add and remove numbers

<Steps>
  <Step title="Expand the pool">
    Select the pool's row to expand it and see its current members.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Add a number">
    Choose a number from the dropdown, which lists numbers not already in this pool, and select **Add**.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Remove a number">
    Select the **X** next to a member number to take it out. The number itself isn't affected: it stays in your inventory and keeps whatever agent routing it already has, it just leaves this pool's rotation.
  </Step>
</Steps>

## Use a pool in a campaign

Point an outbound campaign at a pool by choosing "Local presence (auto)" in the campaign wizard instead of a single fixed caller ID. See [Outbound campaigns](/guides/campaigns/outbound).

## Delete a pool

Select the trash icon on the pool's row and confirm. Campaigns that were using it fall back to their own configured caller ID; the numbers that were members stay in your account, only the grouping is removed.

## Next steps

* Buy or import the numbers you'll group into a pool in [Phone numbers](/guides/telephony/phone-numbers).
* Set up the outbound campaign that will use the pool in [Outbound campaigns](/guides/campaigns/outbound).
